Cinematic Landscapes: Emilia-Romagna in the Films and Works of the Great Directors

The course has two components:   a first part in which students view and discuss Italian films that have been set in the cities of Emilia Romagna, including Federico Fellini, Amarcord (Rimini), Florestano Vancini, La lunga notte del ’43 (Ferrara), Michelangelo Antonioni, Il deserto rosso (Ravenna), Renato De Maria, Paz (Bologna), and Pupi Avati, Gli amici del bar Margherita (Bologna).

In the second part of the course, students will be guided through the process of filmmaking with sections devoted to the writing of screenplays, shot framing, and montage, with the assistance of guest appearances from screenwriters, directors and/or directors of photography, and editors to explain the technical aspects of filmmaking.  The course culminates in the production of a short film written, filmed and edited by students working in small groups.
